I realize that the Toulmin argument can provoke a bit of anxiety in my students and that’s entirely understandable. The Toulmin method identifies and provides labels for various elements of argumentation that we may be unfamiliar with—it isn’t that we’re unfamiliar with the element–it’s that we’re unfamiliar with the label associated with that element.
